Chapter 7: Do You Know What Could Happen?

TJ froze. His cheeks flustered and his eyes widened. Applejack did not just imply what he thought she implied?
“Oh my!” Fluttershy silently exclaimed in her usual calm voice. “You don’t look so good. Are you ill?”
TJ began to feel sweat pour down from his forehead as he slowly glanced back at his rider. Even though her head was turned, she was shaking. Fumes emitted from her head and he saw a frightening shade of pure red.

Megan did her best to bottle up the rage that was building up within her. Being called a companion and assistant was one thing. Being called an overdressed pet…

“Megan…” TJ whispered in concern as Megan held her breath. “Don’t…”
“Maybe she’s hungry. You do feed her properly do you?” Fluttershy asked TJ with concern. “She looks awfully thin…”
“I… I…” stuttered TJ, realizing she was inadvertently adding fuel to the fire. He did his best to silently signal her to be quiet.
“Are you okay sugar?” asked Applejack as she saw the worried look on his face. She then looked at Megan. “Maybe she’s tired? If ya’d like, ya can let ‘er stay here with Winona or with the other animals at Fluttershy’s.”
Fluttershy agreed. “Of course. I’m sure she would-” Megan’s face suddenly went scarlet red and her hair seemed to catch fire as she gritted her teeth and growled. “Squeak!”

Megan suddenly turned and glared at Applejack, her face bright red and fuming more than ever. “LOOK HERE YOU! I- HMPF!!?!” Before Megan could say another word, TJ quickly pulled her off his back and shoved his hoof over her mouth.
“Ah ha ha ha..! Um…” TJ, standing on his hind legs, holding Megan under his foreleg while silencing her with the other, laughed nervously, while the four ponies silently looked at him with confusion. He then started backing away towards some apple trees in the distance. “Would you girls excuse us for just a moment..?”
The girls watched as he carried her away behind the tree. “Now what was that all about?” asked Applejack.
“Beats me.” said Rainbow Dash. “He’s acting really strange. And what’s up with her anyway”
“I have no idea…” Twilight said, rubbing her chin with a pondering look on her face.

Behind the tree, TJ made sure nopony listened and released her.
“That… That…” Megan was still so fumed she could barely speak.
“Relax Megan. She didn’t mean it.”
“If she didn’t have such a cool hat I’d-!“
“MEGAN!” TJ grabbed her shoulders and shook her, snapping her out of her rage. “Please! Just for now. Play along.”
“WHAT?!?” Megan couldn’t believe her own ears. “TJ, I’m not going to be your pet!”
“And you’re not! But listen…” Megan relaxed and listened. “For some reason, these ponies think I’m in charge. I beg of you, just play along and pretend that I am.”
Megan was angry at first, but then gave him an unsure look. “I don’t know TJ… Maybe all this was a mistake…”
TJ tried to reason with her. “Megan, these ponies have clearly never seen anypony like you before-”
“Anypony?” she cocked her eyebrow.
TJ pursed his lips. “Yeah… I… don’t know why I just…” He shook his head. “The point is that these ponies clearly have no master other than themselves.” Megan began to realize what he was getting at. “No… No’body’ is telling them what to do and where to go. Nobody feeds them. Nobody takes care of them. It’s all them!”
Megan pupils shrank as it dawned upon her and her fear grew.

TJ withdrew his hooves from her shoulders. “Do you realize what could happen if they found out I belonged to you?”
Megan grimaced and had a clear idea what could happen. She imagined herself tied to a pole, while an angry mob of ponies with torches yelled and accused her of slavery and oppression. They drew closer, ready to light her up as she struggled in vain to free herself.
Megan gulped. “I… I think I see what you mean…”
TJ grimaced as well and imagined himself being ridiculed and laughed at by every pony in Equestria. Having learned that he was nothing more than a pet and a workhorse, everypony began to point and laugh at him. He shrank down and cringed as their laughter became louder and louder.
TJ gulped. “Yeah… How embarrassing…” Megan gave him a curious glance, wondering whether or not they were thinking the same thing.

After a few more minutes, TJ and Megan returned to the group, with TJ sporting the biggest smile ever.
“Is everything alright?” asked Twilight.
“Sure. Everything is just fine.” He winked at Megan. Megan rolled her eyes and sighed. She then put on a big smile herself and walked up to TJ. “But I should tell you that Megan here doesn’t like to be referred to as ‘pet’. She is my friend and number one companion. Where I go, she goes.” He started to playfully rub her head, messing up her hair and nearly causing her to lose her hat. Megan, with now ruffled hair, gave TJ a ‘don’t push it’ kind of look, which went unnoticed.
“Then I was right!” said Twilight suddenly. “She is your assistant!”
Both TJ and Megan stared at her silently for a moment before TJ coughed, glancing nervously down at his friend who seemed to go red again. “Just friend.” he corrected. The four ponies smiled and nodded in agreement.

Having spent enough time a Sweet Apple Acres, Twilight, Rainbow and TJ said their goodbyes to Applejack and Fluttershy as they continued down the road towards Ponyville. Megan, back in the saddle on top of TJ, didn’t say a word.
“Megan?” TJ called out.
“You want something ‘master’?” Megan replied sarcastically.
“Megan…”
“Admit it TJ. You knew this would happen.” she folded her arms and glared at him.
TJ pursed his lips. He couldn’t lie. Even before they got to Equestria, TJ felt like he was calling the shots. It felt good finally being the master, but Megan was still his best friend, and he knew he had forced her into this predicament. “It’s only until we get home. Honest. I’ve just never been in charge before. I promise I’m not going to ride you or anything.” he joked.
Megan cringed and rubbed her back at the thought. “Just don’t expect me to fetch or anything. We may be on a ‘Planet of the Ponies’ now but I still have my dignity.” she gave him a forgiving smile, making TJ feel more relaxed.
“It’s a deal.”
With the awkwardness ‘hopefully’ left behind them, they continued onward as they began to approach Ponyville.

What a reversal. Like Gulliver and the houyhnhnms, Megan’s role in this story seems to have taken an interesting turn. But she will eventually prove she’s no ‘yahoo’ Wonder what awaits them in the next chapter? Probably something pink…
